Among Vale Inco’s great strengths is a world-class resource base on which to grow.
With a strong project pipeline including expansion at
PT Inco in Indonesia and expansion
at our established Canadian operations in Ontario
and Manitoba, as well as three major
development projects – Goro, Vermelho,
and Onça Puma – Vale Inco is in position to be producing
500,000 tonnes of nickel – more than double what we produced in 2006 – by 2011.
Goro Project
Goro Nickel is a world-class mining project by any standard and a key part of Vale Inco’s growth strategy. Located on the South Pacific island of New Caledonia, an overseas territorial community of France, Goro is among the best undeveloped laterite orebodies in the world, with excellent average grades, 55 million tonnes of estimated measured and indicated mineral reserves, and a very large resource base. The expected annual capacity of the Goro project is 60,000 metric tonnes of nickel and 4,300 to 5,000 metric tonnes of cobalt.
As of September 2007, construction at the Goro Nickel site was two-thirds complete and engineering work was 90 per cent complete. Construction and commissioning are slated for completion in 2008, with first production expected in early 2009.

Vermelho
The Vermelho project in Brazil is currently undergoing environmental assessment, and a timeline for the project will be announced once that process is complete. Estimated production for Vermelho is 46,000 tonnes of nickel per year.
Onça Puma
Onça Puma, acquired by Vale in early 2006, is a world-class nickel deposit. Management of the project was transferred to Vale Inco in early 2007. The project is on schedule and ramp-up is forecast for the second half of 2008.
