Wherever Inco operates, we are committed to making a contribution to our communities.
For over 100 years, beginning in the Sudbury Basin in Ontario and extending to our latest development in New Caledonia, we have acknowledged and acted on what we believe is our corporate responsibility to improve the overall quality of life.
Whether at our established operations or at development projects, we endeavour to serve our communities by working in partnership with local community representatives and organizations. Our goal is to help others help themselves. That's the best way, we believe, to ensure sustainable development and strong communities.
In 2002 and 2003, we continued our long history of consultation and dialogue with community stakeholders in order to support our communities.
As this report of our activities in communities across Canada and around the world shows, our support takes many diverse forms, but our community development programs share common themes. For instance, we are committed to hiring locally and enhancing community development. At our operations around the world, we have a shared focus on supporting community initiatives involving education, local enterprise and health care.
In this, our first Social Responsibility Report, we have documented our community development activities at our operations and our development projects around the world, with the exception of our smaller, joint venture operations in Asia.
- Contributed approximately $3 million through PT Inco to local communities in 2002 and 2003, funding over 70 distinct community development programs in Sorowako and the Southeast and Central Sulawesi regions of Indonesia.
- Reached a comprehensive Development Agreement with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to develop Voiseys Bay. Signed Impact and Benefits Agreements (IBAs) with Innu Nation and Labrador Inuit Association.
- Established a consultation process with local indigenous communities in order to develop a formal Good Neighbour Agreement Memorandum of Understanding in New Caledonia.
- Pledged $1.4 million (Cdn. $2 million) to the Sudbury Hospital Foundation in Ontario.
- Launched a 10-year, $1.8 million (Cdn. $2.5 million) community development initiative to assist the community plan for the future in Thompson, Manitoba.
