In addition to generating numerous jobs, the Goro project will also provide major long-term opportunities for local businesses and a stronger economic base for New Caledonia. The construction phase alone is expected to generate over $100 million per year in economic activity within New Caledonia.
We are currently working with the nearby communities of Yaté and Mont-Dore to help them realize the benefits from plant construction and ongoing services to the operation. An investment fund has been created to allow these groups to develop businesses in the service companies created around the project.
Inco has a more than 100-year history of supporting the communities where we operate around the world. In addition to providing jobs and infrastructure and improving the local economy, we believe we have a corporate responsibility to improve the overall quality of life. This work will continue in New Caledonia as we provide support to various community programs, volunteer efforts and sponsorship activities. In 2002, our sponsorships in terms of funding commitments at Goro Nickel focused on community (43 per cent), education (37 per cent), arts and culture (10 per cent), and conferences (10 per cent). In 2003, sponsorship funding focused on community (35 per cent), education (38 per cent) and arts and culture (21 per cent) and sports (6 per cent).
- After Cyclone Erica struck New Caledonia on March 14, 2003, Goro Nickel employees went to the local Yaté community to help people clean up roads, gather green wastes and rebuild. We also assisted the Mont-Dore Municipality Technical Services on a community work program for four months following Cyclone Erica.
- Hosted a celebration of the Inco Centennial at Chateau Hagen in Koumac located in Northern Province during the Thiebaghi 100 Year Festivities.
- Participated in and sponsored various community and socio-cultural events in New Caledonia, including “Les jeudis de l'Anse Vata” in Nouméa, annual participation in the Yaté Fair and the Mont-Dore Art & Dance Festival.
- Supported educational initiatives in 2002 and 2003 led by the Jules Garnier Association for a high school youth group, the School of Management and Commerce and the University of New Caledonia (Diploma of University Scientific and Technical Studies in Metallurgy).

Les jeudis de lAnse Vata
Each Thursday evening in New Caledonia, people are invited to attend a big fair – “Les jeudis de l'Anse Vata” where artists, professionals, companies or municipalities demonstrate their knowledge on a range of specific topics of interest to the people of New Caledonia such as water, revegetation, nickel and tourism. This fair is very popular and well attended. As the official sponsor of the municipalities of New Caledonia, Goro Nickel is one of the main sponsors with our own fair.
