Inco's Port Colborne, Ontario nickel refinery was commissioned in 1918 and produced electrolytic nickel until 1984.

At its peak during World War II, our operation employed more than 2,400 people. With automation, operational changes and the cessation of electrolytic refining of nickel, the facility, which principally refines cobalt and precious metals, now has 184 employees. Still, Inco remains a major employer in the city of 20,000 located in the Niagara Peninsula on the north shore of Lake Erie.

During World War II, the Port Colborne facility was the world's largest source of refined nickel, a key metal in the manufacture of armaments for the Allied war effort. Today, the refinery produces platinum-group metals and cobalt metal. As well, our Port Colborne operation serves as a nickel packaging and distribution centre.

  • Continued to support the Community Based Risk Assessment (CBRA) process concerning Port Colborne soils.
  • Fully funded the Community Health Assessment Project (CHAP).
  • Held a Port Colborne Refinery Open House for the community in celebration of Inco’s 100th anniversary in 2002.
  • Support the completion of the CHAP studies.
  • Complete the CBRA process.
