Sudbury's evolution from a small pick-and-shovel mining town to an economically diverse and culturally rich community as well as a mining centre of excellence has paralleled Inco's own development over the past century. ìSudbury and Inco grew up together,î says Scott McDonald, General Manager, Ontario Operations, in Sudbury, Ontario. From a single copper smelter in 1883, Inco's mining and refining operations in Sudbury are now among the largest in the world.
The Sudbury Basin possesses untapped deposits of nickel and copper that help ensure mining will continue to play an important role in the life of the community.
Still, Sudbury has recognized the need to diversify its economy to secure its future. Drawing on the high-tech expertise of our workforce, Inco has helped Sudbury become a centre for international mining research and development.
Inco is also helping Sudbury achieve economic diversity in the areas of health care, education and tourism. Our initial $4 million (Cdn. $5 million) donation to Science North in 1984 was the largest corporate donation in Canadian history at the time and the catalyst that created this world-class science centre. Science North generates substantial tourist revenues for the region. Says McDonald, ìOur company has a responsibility to help the community shape and attain a new vision for the future.î
