Partnering for Social Responsibility

At Inco, we work hard at being a responsible community partner wherever we operate. As part of our commitment, we endeavour to affiliate our company and our activities with a number of organizations that promote social responsibility around the world.

We are a signatory to, and an active participant in, the Mining Association of Canada's Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) initiative. Announced in 2004, TSM encompasses environmental management and stakeholder inclusion practices that will help the Canadian mining industry maintain its social licence to operate. As well, we are members of Canadian Business for Social Responsibility, a non-profit, business-led, national organization of Canadian companies that have made a commitment to operate in a socially, environmentally and financially responsible manner, recognizing the interests of their stakeholders, including investors, customers, employees, business partners, local communities, the environment and society at large. In 2004, we also continued with our membership in the U.S.-based Business for Social Responsibility organization.

FTSE4GOOD

In 2003, FTSE Group, a UK-based stock market index firm, included Inco in its socially responsible investment index series: FTSE4Good. The FTSE4Good index series has been designed to reflect the performance of socially responsible companies and provides investors with a tool to measure the performance of companies that meet international standards of corporate responsibility.

In 2004, FTSE made the decision to include Inco in its Global Resource Sector ranking. In order to maintain our FTSE4Good status, we have been granted a deferral from the FTSE4Good Committee to meet the additional human rights criteria for this sector in 2005. We are currently working toward achieving that goal.
