Partnering with Our Communities

In 2004, we announced our intention to become a major sponsor of Port Colborne's Canal Days Summer Festival, committing $11,550 (Cdn. $15,000). This community event takes place over the long weekend in August and invites tens of thousands of visitors to view the Tall Ships that enter the Welland Canal to mark the occasion. There are also kite flying demonstrations, an antique car show, a variety of entertainment and a host of family activities included in the Festival.

Over the past year, our employees – 187 of them – made the largest contribution to the United Way in our history. The Cdn. $5,400 pledged by employees was matched by Inco, bringing our total contribution to Cdn. $10,800.

We continued to work with the local food bank, providing storage space for up to 15 tons of food. We also continued to provide scholarships and sponsor regional fairs, Junior Achievement, the Navy League, Air Cadets, Boy Scouts, Marine Rescue Unit, Santa Claus Parade and minor sports in Port Colborne. As well, we supported the Showboat Festival Theatre, the Operatic Society and the Museum.
