Our Commitment to Communities

Sudbury

The future we are striving to create is one that provides safe, sustained and profitable production. It's a future that benefits our company, our employees and our community. - Mark Cutifani, President, Ontario Operations Inco has been part of life in Sudbury, Ontario for well over 100 years. For much of that time, the community was known only as a mining town, but today the City of Greater Sudbury is the government, manufacturing, educational and medical centre of northeastern Ontario.

Inco is a proud partner with the people of Sudbury. We have played a significant role in building the infrastructure of the city, and promoting its growth, diverse culture and rich sense of community.

  2004 PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Contributed $269,500 (Cdn. $350,000) to the Greater Sudbury area through our corporate donations program.
  • Contributed $328,000 (Cdn. $426,330) to the United Way Sudbury and District - raised by employees, pensioners, the company and through special events.
  • Held bi-monthly meetings with members of the Copper Cliff Citizens Liaison Committee to ensure that local residents have a voice on issues associated with our operations.
  • Continued to play a large role in community governance with universities, colleges, the hospital and other institutions.
  • Held open houses in the spring and fall in Lively, Ontario, to inform residents about our progress on controlling blowing tailings dust.
  • Continued to support and participate in the Sudbury Soils Study, which is conducting a detailed quantitative health and environmental risk assessment of six metals/metalloids emitted from historical smelting activities.
