Economic Contribution
Community Giving
Resilient, healthy and prosperous communities are the foundation upon which strong societies are built. That belief underlies our long-standing community giving program, designed to help advance the social, cultural and economic well-being of the communities where we operate and where the majority of our employees live and work.
A LEGACY OF SUPPORT
Over the years, we have financially supported the work of numerous charitable, educational, health, social and cultural organizations. At the same time, many of our employees have been active and generous volunteers in their communities. Our past contributions have included:
- $10 million (Cdn. $15 million) multi-year pledge to the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador.
- $850,000 (Cdn. $1.2 million) donation to the Innu Healing Foundation's Building Hope Campaign to build two new recreation centres in the remote Labrador communities of Sheshatshiu and Natuashish.
- $346,500 (Cdn. $450,000) to the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research (CIAR) for the Earth System Evolution Program.
- $577,500 (Cdn. $750,000) to the Sudbury YMCA's Centre for Life which supports a fitness facility, daycare, a pool, and various counselling, camp and other outreach programs.
- $1.4 million (Cdn. $2 million) contribution to Sudbury Regional Hospital's Heart & Soul campaign to expand its already world class cancer centre and construct a new long-term care facility.
- $360,000 (Cdn. $500,000) to Dynamic Earth, the latest example of our long-term support of Science North in Sudbury.
OUR 2004 CONTRIBUTIONS
In 2004, Inco contributed $1.5 million to various charitable, non-profit organizations around the world which met our funding criteria. We additionally contributed through gifts-in-kind and by enabling our employees to participate in worthy events and causes. Through our educational matching gift program, we also match contributions made to eligible accredited higher educational institutions by our Canadian employees and pensioners.
