The 1987 Brundtland Commission Report introduced the most common definition of the
term Sustainable Development which stated we must meet the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Vale Inco endorses the principles of sustainable development, as a cornerstone of
our social license to continue to extract and process minerals. Our communities are
vital to our long-term viability and we are mindful of their important role in our
operations. We recognize that a healthy and safe working place, located in clean,
safe and prosperous communities is fundamental to our corporate well-being and to
society.
We endeavour to ensure that our operations and development projects meet the
highest standards, both in terms of the workplace and environment and in terms of the
socio-economic dynamics of the communities where we operate. We also recognize that
as a company with over a century of mining history, we have created some legacy
issues. We are working to address these issues to ensure that our properties and the
surrounding communities are secure.
