Environment

At Vale Inco, environmental stewardship is integral to our business practices and our culture. Accepting responsibility and acting responsibly is the principle that guides us wherever we operate, regardless of the jurisdiction of each of our operations and the related environmental legislation.

Where we are involved in developing new operations, such as Voisey's Bay, Canada and Goro, New Caledonia, we have identified best practices through environmental assessment processes and are designing these projects to have a minimum impact on the environment during the construction and operation phases. In our existing operations, where in some cases we have been operating for as long as a century, we are implementing measures to deal responsibly with legacy issues where they exist and are working to ensure that we can meet and surpass the standards that are expected of us in our day-to-day operations. Wherever we operate - or plan to operate - we consult and work in partnership with our communities on matters of mutual environmental concern.

Our Performance

Our environmental performance is driven by our commitment to continuous improvement. We set performance objectives each year, both corporately and at each operation and we strive to meet these objectives. We additionally use performance indicators to monitor and track our performance and to identify those areas where we need to improve.

Use the navigation on the left to view the areas of our environmental focus and highlights of our recent environmental performance. A more complete discussion of our performance - including our accomplishments and challenges - can be found in our Toward Sustainability: 2006 Health, Safety, Environment and Community Report.
